Unlocking Reimbursement for MedTech Innovation
Bridging the gap between Health Technology Assessment, reimbursement, and patient access to innovative medical technologies.
VI Research, with the support of the South African Medical Technology Industry Association (SAMED), is proud to present the HTA Masterclass Series: From HTA to Payer Approval – Unlocking Reimbursement for MedTech Innovation.
This six-part educational series is designed to strengthen understanding of Health Technology Assessment (HTA) and its role in supporting evidence-based decision-making, reimbursement pathways, and market access for innovative medical technologies.
Through a combination of expert insights, practical discussions, and real-world applications, the series explores the challenges associated with evaluating medical devices and navigating the reimbursement landscape.
About the HTA Masterclass Series
Health Technology Assessment plays an important role in determining the clinical value, economic implications, and broader impact of healthcare technologies. However, navigating HTA requirements and reimbursement processes can be particularly challenging for medical devices, given their unique characteristics and evolving evidence requirements.
The HTA Masterclass Series aims to bridge the gap between theoretical HTA concepts and their practical application in reimbursement decision-making.
The series provides participants with opportunities to strengthen their understanding of HTA principles, explore the complexities of medical device assessment, and gain practical insights into preparing evidence to support reimbursement applications.
Exploring the Journey from HTA to Reimbursement
The masterclass consists of six workshops, each addressing an important aspect of HTA and reimbursement for medical technologies.
Workshop 1: An Inconvenient Truth – Let's Start with WHY
Introducing the importance of HTA and examining why evidence-based assessment is essential for healthcare decision-making and reimbursement.
Workshop 2: Confronting Reality – Understanding the WHAT
Exploring the fundamental concepts of HTA and the evidence requirements involved in evaluating healthcare technologies.
Workshop 3: Overview of Six Unique HTA Challenges for Devices
Examining the distinctive characteristics of medical devices and the challenges they present within traditional HTA frameworks.
Workshop 4: Discovery Deep Dive
Taking a closer look at the practical considerations and evidence requirements involved in assessing medical technologies.
Workshop 5: Medscheme Deep Dive
Focusing on the Medscheme reimbursement application process, with practical insights into preparing and evaluating supporting HTA evidence.
Workshop 6: Metropolitan Health
Concluding the series with a focus on Metropolitan Health and further insights into the reimbursement landscape for medical technologies.
Connecting Knowledge with Practical Application
Beyond introducing HTA concepts, the series emphasises their practical relevance to medical technology assessment and reimbursement.
By exploring real-world challenges and reimbursement processes, the masterclass seeks to encourage informed discussions and strengthen participants' confidence in navigating the evidence requirements associated with medical device reimbursement.
The initiative also provides a valuable platform for knowledge sharing and engagement among stakeholders involved in medical technology assessment, market access, and healthcare decision-making.
Upcoming Workshop: Metropolitan Health
The HTA Masterclass Series will conclude with Workshop 6: Metropolitan Health, scheduled for:
Date: 18 November 2026
Time: 12:00–13:30 SAST
Topic: Metropolitan Health
This final workshop marks an important milestone in the series, bringing together the knowledge and insights explored throughout the previous sessions.
Supporting Evidence-Based Access to Medical Technology
At VI Research, we believe that generating robust evidence and strengthening understanding of HTA are essential to supporting informed healthcare decisions and improving access to innovative medical technologies.
Through initiatives such as the HTA Masterclass Series, we remain committed to promoting knowledge sharing, professional development, and evidence-based approaches to healthcare technology assessment and reimbursement.
We extend our appreciation to SAMED for its support of this educational initiative and to all participants and contributors who have engaged with the series.
